Buzz Rides is a free transportation system for students at UNC-Chapel Hill that also offers mobile advertising for local businesses. The company operates 100 percent electric vehicles that seat up to five passengers.

Services

Buzz Rides provides an average of 120 rides per night, operating within a 1.5-to-2-mile radius of the UNC-CH campus. Rides are requested via the "Buzz Rides UNC" iOS app, and are free for students. They are also available for event booking seven days a week.

Advertising

Advertisers are allowed a minimum of 60 hours per month of exposure via on-vehicle ads. Advertising packages may also include distribution of samples, brochures, coupons or give-aways during rides.

Businesses that have advertised on Buzz Rides vehicles include Roote North Carolina, an organic food and lifestyle company, and Shortbread Lofts, an apartment complex in downtown Chapel Hill.

History

Buzz Rides founders Skavronek and Draughon are students at UNC-CH's Kenan-Flagler Business School. When they studied abroad in India in the summer of 2013, they were impressed with the taxis of New Delhi, called "tuk-tuks." The small, open-air vehicles currently used by the company are inspired by these "tuk-tuks."
