UNC NROTC is the University of North Carolina battalion of the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps. The goal of the NROTC program is to develop participants mentally, morally and physically, with the goal of commissioning them as officers in the United States Navy and Marine Corps upon college graduation.

The program emphasizes core values of honor, courage and commitment, and endow midshipmen a basic professional background and motivation toward careers in the naval service.

Location

The UNC NROTC Battalion is housed in the Naval Armory, located on UNC-Chapel Hill campus.

Program Overview

NROTC midshipmen experience a blend of civilian and military life, including physical and academic training.

Students must complete a Naval Science minor — which covers skills in navigation, weapons, engineering and leadership — while studying and UNC, as well as meet additional academic requirements:

  • Two English courses
  • One course in American history or national security policy
  • One course in world culture and regional studies
  • Two courses in Calculus before the end of sophomore year
  • Two courses in Calculus-based Physics before the end of junior year
  • Maintaining a minimum 2.5 GPA.

Midshipmen also must complete and physical readiness tests twice every semester. To prepare for these tests, they participate in weekly hour-long physical training sessions.

How to Join

High school students wishing to join UNC NROTC in college can apply for entry via the NROTC Scholarship Program, and earn free college tuition while working towards their commissioning. Students already in undergrad can join via the NROTC College Program and become a member of the battalion while waiting to apply for a scholarship.
