Proposed Logos

There are two logos. The first is the front page welcome logo. The second is the logo that goes on print and into the header's background. The second logo must look good when printed in color or black and white. The first logo that only goes on the front page can be anything you fancy. But, do follow these guidelines:

Upload your own logo to this page and show off your creativity. Just add a new heading, and post it here in gif, jpeg, or png format. Also, upload as a file the vectorized equivalent (such as svg). See [Help with Images] to learn how. Here are some general guidelines for a Chico wiki logo:

  • The logo should work with many color schemes.
  • It should represent something great about Chico or wikis.
  • Make it as abstract or literal as you wish.
  • Avoid certain combinations of colors that some people cannot differentiate between (such as red and green).
  • Logos must be licensed under the Creative Commons-By license, so that
  • you may modify any logo posted here (but you must give credit if the author requires it).
  • Use a vector file format such as .svg — check out Inkscape for a great vector graphics studio!
  • The logo for print must look good at any size and must print well for flyers, leaflets, posters, etc. That means it should look reasonable if printed as gray scale or black and white.

A Suggested Logo for Print

chico_printed_logo.svg

I came to this grouping of shapes after manipulating the above tree. The orbs are arranged in a bent formation, similar to the molecular shape of water. There's a lot of water flowing through (creeks) and under (the excruciatingly slow moving water of our aquifer) Chico at any given time. The formation surrounds a triangle that represents the hills and mountains that are very near Chico. Finally, the triangle and the orbs as a whole represents the beloved trees of Chico. — RyanMikulovsky

2008-08-23 20:17:42   Any critiques about the Bidwell Mansion header logo? They're very much welcomed. —RyanMikulovsky

2008-08-24 01:27:04   Very nice logo. At first when I saw it, I thought it was the house from Psycho. The dark background and eerie light reminded me of the movie. Maybe it's just me. —Jedron

  • I can certainly see how the house could be mistaken as something out of Psycho. I had to laugh a little about that. This may be the perfect opportunity to think about a new color scheme, although the current color pallete in the header is rather pleasing to my eyes. Certainly better, in my opinion, than the teal orbs. Stacey did a terrific job on the Bidwell Mansion —RyanMikulovsky
  • Must have been totally subconscious, but yeah, it does have quite a resemblance to Norman Bates' home. Glad to hear people like it, and that once the initial creepiness of looking like "Psycho" wears off, it is recognizable. If anyone wants the original .svg of it (before Ryan shrunk it down and added the blue behind it) to make it more Bidwell-ish and less Bates-ish, drop me a line and I'll be happy to send it on. Oh, and I think the color scheme is nice. Any color emanating from behind a big Victorian home drawn in B&W will probably turn out with that eerie aura. —StaceyEllis

2008-08-28 21:50:36   A less Psycho-esque version of the Bidwell Mansion has been added that tries to stay true to the actual color scheme. Thoughts on this? Preferences between this and the black and white version? —StaceyEllis

2008-09-02 20:46:46   Maybe you could add a golden colored glow behind the new logo. —Jedron

How about the logo now? Should it be moved more to the left though? Or did you have a different glow in mind? It looks nice to me. Like a sunrise. —RyanMikulovsky

It looks great. It's just like a sunrise. —Jedron

2008-09-02 21:42:22   It looks like it wouldn't print or transfer into different sizes well. Well, maybe it would. I would try and stylize the "Chico Wiki" aspect of the logo to draw a connection between the mansion image and the site. —PhilipNeustrom

  • Yes, the proposed logos are not exactly the best sort of thing for the press as required in the guidelines above. Something abstract like Davis has would be nice to make there be no doubt that it's Chico Wiki — and it prints well. Which does make your idea of stylizing the text a good one. That'll be a challenge. I thought perhaps finding letters by John Bidwell and stylizing Chico to his handwriting. —RyanMikulovsky

2008-09-03 07:33:58   I've got a friend who does a lot of the graphic design on campus who said she'd be willing to do a simple header/logo a few months back. I'll bug her and see if she's still up for it. She does a lot of print design as well, we might be able to get a nice flyer or two out of it. —DavidStillman

2008-09-03 11:20:17   I like the mansion logo much better with the golden "sunrise" glow behind it. I wasn't thrilled with the new version, but put it up since I hoped someone could improve upon it. Good teamwork, Jedron and Ryan! Also, I think it would be fantastic if we could get some help from someone with some training and an eye for design. David, if your friend is willing to help us out, that would be wonderful! —StaceyEllis

2008-09-03 22:01:14   The only problem I see with the logo right now is the font seems a little boring. I'd try something like Optima, which is light on the serifs. Or if your hearts are set on a sans-serif, I'd go with Century Gothic, which is a little thinner and will add circles to your letters. Though, I'd like to note that IANA Artist, so take this with a grain of salt. —BrentLaabs
