Right in the heart of campus, stands a Flagpole at the Memorial Union quad. In a way, the flagpole is the social center-of-gravity as many students will meet up at it. The flagpole is usually the place of origin for remembrance walks, protests in the quad, and various flag ceremonies like raising and lowering the flag. The raising and lowering of the flags is a joint responsibility between the Information Desk, NROTC, and ROTC.

The University of California flag can be flown at half staff in memoriam to honor deceased students, staff, faculty and faculty emeriti. When the flag is at half-staff, a memorial card is posted on the north side of the flagpole to recognize the memory of that individual. The Memorial Union homepage displays current information on who the flags are lowered in honor of, or check the Memorial Union articles page for a full listing.
