Their breadsticks are legendary. People stumble in and order Steve's breadsticks while sipping on their Woodstock's soda cups. —AdamAnderson

...and they have the best croutons in town! —BevSykes

If you're looking to save some bucks and still get a lot of food, try getting just the cheesy bread (with sauce). - PhilipNeustrom

If you purchase a side salad, you have only one opportunity to fill the bowl at the salad bar. To exceed the capacity of the small bowl they provide, fill the bowl, layer cucumbers on the top to form a hermetic seal, layer more food on top, and repeat. At your discretion, potato salad can be used as mortar. —CraigBrozinsky

2005-07-05 15:36:09   Good service, good pizza/pasta, and one of the only self serve salad bars in town. —SiennaGrass

2005-07-17 23:07:26   Try their burgers, there are really good! —BenjaminRosenstein

2005-09-27 10:20:44   so the best thing to do is to get the croutons, eat them while you wait for your breadsticks.. and then there.. you have a meal for like 4.50. —JulienElstob

2005-10-03 12:56:53   I ate at the Steve's Pizza in the Marketplace when I first came to Davis as a freshman but wasn't very thrilled. Recently, though, I've tired of Woodstocks—a different story—and when my coworkers ordered Steve's for the office, I was sold. This place is excellent—the staff is so friendly and has a sixth sense when it comes to getting you a box for pizza leftovers. I love the Californian (artichokes, olives, pesto sauce, chicken) but my office ordered Pepperoni too and it was shockingly good. I guess that's the mark of a great pizza parlor? —LiRic

2005-10-03 14:55:53   LiRic I think you ate at Pete's if it was in the Marketplace. I don't think Steve's ever had a location there. —RogerClark

2005-10-03 13:21:42   Definitely stick to the breadsticks which are, by far, better than the pizza. Oddly and undesirably, the meatball sub has raw vegetables on it and the Italian sandwich, which consists of pepperoni, salami, and cheddar cheese, is as greasy and wet as it sounds. —CraigBrozinsky

2006-05-17 01:06:39   Their standard pizzas don't do much for me, but their Artichoke/Chicken/Garlic pizza is superb. —ChrisLambertus

2006-06-09 15:27:15   The pizza here wasn't great. Village Bakery Pizza is much better —JessicaFu

2006-10-03 16:14:59   They used to have a B1G1 deal on Mondays or Tuesday for dining in/pick up. It was a great deal, but was apparently discontinued sometime in the last year. —BigSlice

2006-10-28 09:48:40   I grew up with Steve's son Mark...the Wilkinsons are a wonderful family! —AdamFlowers

2006-12-11 22:35:09   Paid $19.95 for a Family Cheese pizza (delivered) that was terrible ...no sauce to speak of, flavorless cheese. As my 5 year old grandson said, "That was a long wait (45 minutes) for a pizza that's not good. Pappa Murphy's is five times better at less than half the price. —DavisWheeler

2007-03-02 12:37:33   I don't know what people are talking about... this is by far the best pizza place in town. And believe me, I eat my fair share of pizza. The breadsticks are truly amazing, described in the Aggie as "Edible heroin." And the pizza is really good, cheezy and with a good sauce. They also offer a huge bucket of ranch, which I never fail to order for delivery. —ElizabethJohnson

2007-03-28 12:46:46   What the hell is this? "we don't put extra cheese on breadsticks" OKAY THEN I TAKE MY BUSINESS ELSEWHERE! Not to mention I've a) gotten extra cheese on breadsticks before and b) It's damn simple to make it work, but it's the lack of trying to please semi odd requests from loyal customers that pisses me off. Step it up Wilky —StevenDaubert

2007-03-30 23:42:00   Follow up, I spent 60 bucks in pizza the last 3 days, none of it was at Steves, it probably would have been If I hadn't have been told no —StevenDaubert

2007-05-02 20:40:07   I've only had this pizza at Picnic In The Park, so maybe it's not fair to judge it, but I was unimpressed. It wasn't bad (you have to work really hard to make bad pizza), but the crust was tasteless. —CovertProfessor

2007-06-07 20:46:48   I happened to be looking through the magazine "Pizza Today" today, you know, like y'do (actually I found it in a pizza place down here in Orange County), and it had a listing of the "top 100 independant pizzarias in the United States." There were probably less than six in California in that entire list. Coming in at number 16, however, Steve's Pizza, Davis, CA!!! —KrisFricke

2007-07-19 18:41:11   Good meatballs in the spaghetti very amazing, when i was on home arrests i ordered out all the time very very good meatballs —dickjones

2007-07-21 23:48:28   this place is totally brilliant. i grew tired of the somewhat thin and floppy crust at Woodstock's and tried out Steves. It was damn good. I ordered a large with pepperoni, mushrooms, and onions. It really was worth it. The crust isn't greasy at all, so I didn't feel like crap after eating some with my roommate. As of now, the only thing i get from Woodstock's is the Firebird; anything else must be Steve's. —ketan

2007-07-29 22:02:28   For the price ($22) of 3 topping family (xlarge) pizza, I didn't think it was worth it. I think Village Bakery was much better. Slightly better than Pizza Guys. Maybe par with Round Table. —atwong

2007-08-03 14:41:24   Try the meat balls they are excellent, and friendly service steeves knows what they are doing good clean salad bar respectful place, of course i will be back —Brians

2007-08-12 20:15:04   Amazing pizza. Delivered fresh pizza in 30 minutes. It wasn't greasy at all. The toppings (mushroom and spinach) were super fresh; outstanding sauce. Exactly what I think of when I think of "California pizza." Can't wait for my mom to try it when she comes out. —Casey

2007-10-19 14:50:01   Had been Steves's Pizza several times. It was nothing to blame until a horrible expereince. My wife got stomach upset and vomitous feeling after eating their flavorless cheese topping. Frontdesk girl offered baking a new replacement pizza but the male manager insisted nothing wrong with their cheese. Will never ever go again!!! —cchang

2007-11-29 15:25:12   I used to eat here... then they stopped doing the Tuesday special (2 for 1)... then I started working here and returned to eating here... I miss this place. —William.Peacock

2007-12-19 21:17:46   It's a little on the pricey side, but worth it! —thelonepiper555

2008-01-18 16:37:08   We stopped ordering pizza from them because we ordered one about a month ago, and they tried delivering it to an address that we haven't lived at in 5 years (and have since ordered several pizzas from them). They called after about an hour and a half, and told us that they were going to stop by and pick up more pizzas on the way to our correct address. Our pizza took over 2 hours for delivery (with no apologies), and was totally cold by the time I received it. I will never go there again. —DavisMan56

2008-02-09 18:21:52   Consistently fresh veggies and non-greasy pizza. Good stuff. —StellaChiara

2008-02-13 23:21:59   It's a little pricey for anything but the breadsticks. If you get just breadsticks and you're a student it's only 5.50. THe breadsticks are by far the best things they have there. Most of the staff are incredibly nice. Only had problems with one guy there (not a nice guy). The environment is nice and there is usually football on the TV. Great place for lunch. —nico

  • As of June 30, 2008 it's $4.57 for Breadsticks w/ student discount. —TR

2008-06-22 20:36:30   Wasn't Steve's officially renamed to "Steve's Pizza and Grill"? —MaryLieth

2008-07-05 19:44:22   I'm pretty sure this is the most expensive pizza place in Davis. It's nowhere NEAR worth the price. Steve's, like Woodstock's, has an image of being one of the best places in town, but it's not even close. —JimBob

  • I'll admit it's certainly pricy. Unlike Woodstocks, however, Steve's is actually good. Like others have said, if you're really concerned about price, get the cheesy breadsticks. —TR

2008-09-29 18:54:24   Steves place still fails to be proactive about getting extra cheese on my breadsticks, once again the have lost business. I don't fault the 8 dollar an hour cashier for refusing me service, she has no inkling that it's been a long and protracted battle to get some extra cheese on my stix. She doesn't know or care that their has been numerous times in the past that the cheese has been dearly lacking, she just wants to push the button and get to the next customer. If your ever on the wiki I'm sorry that you perceived rudeness from me... In her defense she has had the only logical explanation (there is no extra cheese button) and she probably was put off by my energy on the matter. If any managers of Steve read this and actually care to try and salvage a very jaded long term customer, go for it. But, you have to answer me this: Why would you ever ever tell someone who is willing to not just pay but be gouged no? —StevenDaubert

2008-10-13 23:16:07   If you want extra cheese, why don't you just buy a cheese pizza.... —BretCorzine

2008-10-29 17:16:52   GLUTEN FREE!!! yessssssssss —Cuttlefish09

2008-11-13 07:54:31   Gluten free crust??? How exciting! Anyone know if this is just at the Davis location? I live in Woodland now, but would certainly make the trip for GF crust. —AmLin

2008-11-21 08:19:59   I tried their gluten free crust the other other day and it was pretty good. I had the BBQ chicken pizza, but I think next time I'd get a more traditional pizza...the chicken was pretty overcooked and dry. I'm still on the fence about whether the Still Riding Pizza (which Steve's uses) or Whole Foods (which I use at home) crust's are better, but nonetheless, it was tasty. For now, the only downside of the GF pizza is the medium size only and the price. I realize it definitely costs more for Steve's to purchase these crust's, but I would love it if someone could explain to me why GF items cost more in general. Most GF companies only produce GF goods, and is rice flour really that much more expensive than wheat flour...or are they just using the excuse that it's a "specialty item" to overcharge people with special diets? —AmLin

2009-01-16 19:20:28   @AmLin

I work at Steve's and I guarantee that they are not overcharging for the crust. The owner doesn't want to charge that much, but he really has no other choice. —BretCorzine

Thank you Bret, and note my comment above. I realize Steve's has to pay more, I just really don't understand why a GF product should cost more. It's more of a complaint about GF products than a complaint about Steve's. But, if I am going to pay THAT much for a pizza, then it should be good, and in this case, I could have done a better job at home w/ a crust from Whole Foods. -AmLin

2009-03-11 09:33:19   I ordered from Steve's last month. I'd sprained my ankle and had to have my pizza delivered. They got the wrong address three times, called me up each time asking for my address again, and then ended up delivering the wrong pizza and ran off before I could even look inside. I called them up, and the guy brought over my now cold pizza without any sort of refund or anything. I might as well have walked straight there with the number of times I had to get up because of their mistakes.

Couldn't tell about the quality of pizza, since it was cold by the time I got it. By the time I got it, it was more than two hours later than I'd ordered it. —KarinaSummers

2009-03-16 22:05:15   This pizza is best served HOT (for some reason, its gross cold). But if you have leftovers, just popping it into the oven for a bit does the trick. I really like Steve's and its perfect for Tuesday's parties when you can get 2 XL pizza's for the price of one! —BrookeB

2009-04-01 21:42:28   General Manager has HUGE service issues—he was rude & just plain offensive. Everyone else who works here seems very nice, but he rules with an iron fist. I have gone here throughout college & since moving back with kids, but have no need to spend our money here after tonight's experience. Yuck. There are lots of places in town—go somewhere else!! Village; Woodstock's; Round Table... even Costco sells pizza!! —EmilyAult

2009-04-05 21:18:52   Just had my first Steve's experience this evening. The food was excellent, as was the service. My only complaint was that 30 minutes after we left (after going for Yogurt and coffee), we came back to our car and looked on the porch and saw our plates and left over beer was still on the table, after at least a half hour. Either the staff isn't doing their job or they don't have enough staff on. Either way, not clearing up plates within 5 minutes of a party's departure is pretty gross, especially for people who are just arriving. —condemned2bfree

2009-06-11 14:26:34   The Manager DOES have customer service Issues. I will confirm this. I was overcharged and he rolled his eyes at me, when I confronted him about it. I have been going to Steve's for years, and I will now not be going back. —JMor

2009-06-15 17:51:05   Steve's Barbeque Chicken Pizza is a masterpiece. —JamesWaterhouse

2009-08-15 23:41:05   Outstanding food, but pricey. Their pizzas are great, and they have probably the best salad bar I can think of for a reasonable price. If you just build yourself a salad, that's a meal right there! A big thumbs up! —Darren22

2009-08-16 13:39:44   Called ahead the other night to make sure the all-you-can-eat salad bar was still open, yet when I arrived they informed me that the all-you-can-eat salad bar option had been replaced 4 months ago with 3 different one-trip options - a small, medium, or large plate. WTF? Thats why I called ahead. When I got there, I informed the cashier that I had pre-discussed the buffet. What kind of a salad bar are you if there isn't a buffet option? Shame on you Steve's! Please get your act together and re-introduce the all-you-can-eat option or dispose of the salad bar entirely! I will be boycotting your establishment. —convoy

  • I certainly would not mind paying a dollar more for an all-you-can-eat option. Heck, maybe even two dollars more. —hankim

2009-11-28 21:16:19   I have unfortunately discovered the cheesy bread here at Steve's and I am deeply saddened to say that I will be at least 8 pounds heavier when I graduate in 5 months. They truly are edible crack. ALSO: you can get them made with pepperocinis on top. This is a disaster. —soledad101

2010-03-07 16:36:36   Steve's Place does not have internet connectivity as it claimed on the sign at the front door. —ptu

2010-04-09 19:31:28   my experiences have been Pizza Good!, service not so good. —RocksandDirt

2010-04-09 19:38:30   This is better than some pizza in town, but others are better. I just don't think the crust has any flavor and the sauce is so-so. The toppings are quite good, though. —CovertProfessor

2010-04-29 02:19:24   Steve's pizza unfortunately is really going downhill as they seem to be aggressively trying to cut costs. First they made the salad bar "one trip only", then today I called in an order while I was walking there and was told "not sure if you can get pepperocinis on stix bc there is no button for it, but I'll check," then when I arrived was told it is not allowed. Fortunately I was also getting salad bar and essentially emptied the canister of pepperocinis onto my plate (partly out of spite, a-hem! see what sucky customer service does?) a. I have been doing ordering my stix like that for months now and b. I only discovered this because once when I called in an order the person offered it to me as an option. In addition to this I was in a huge group of around 20 people eating in the back room. I asked for two small "to go" boxes and got them and when my friend went and asked for one more the guy said he had to ask the manager if it was allowed. Really? I don't blame the staff obviously but the manager is clearly a huge jackass. —soledad101

2010-06-27 00:26:46   I think this place is under new management, I haven't seen that creepy old guy recently. Maybe I will start getting $5 lunch specials again. —reviewaskew

2010-08-09 08:44:28   Tried a couple of slices of pepperoni at the Farmers Market last week and was pleasantly surprised. It has taken the reign of best testing pepperoni pizza for me, beating out Uncle Vito's, Woodstock and Village (small one). Great tasting ingredients and dough. Kind of funny, but the pizza reminded me of the deliciousness of devouring a frozen pizza at 2am after hitting the bars, in a good way. —103

2010-08-14 19:17:46   I had the gluten free pizza once, it was alright but very expensive! (Though, that's the norm for gluten-free food, so don't hold that against them too much.) I tried to go in last week, and they didn't offer it anymore. I will look into this more. —TerrenceMurphy

2010-10-17 14:33:15   Ordered a pizza for the first time last night - blech!! My husband and I each ate 1 piece and then promptly threw the rest in the garbage. The pizza was incredibly greasy, like a heart attack waiting to happen! It was disgusting. —JenniferF

2010-11-11 16:49:44   My favorite pizza place in town. Not too loud, not overrun with students. Pizza is perhaps the best (standard-type) in Davis, aside from various more-gourmet options like Village. Good for families, and it's not a big chain. —Flokkenfisch

2010-12-01 19:24:11   this place is a joke. I called and asked if they had any specials and the "kid" stupidly said "uhhh, no" I asked how much a large pepperoni pizza would be and he said " uhhh, im not sure" ....... well why dont you figure it out as im ordering from woodstocks........a joke —Mr.eNigma

2011-02-13 10:45:30   Just found out they changed ownership and won't have any alcohol for 45 days or so. So, no happy hour. Pizza's still great though! —BaileyMeeker

2011-05-06 10:02:26   I had a really good Philly Cheese Steak here. It might even be better than the one I had at 3rd & U. —jsogul

2011-06-02 12:29:07   I've been eating Pizza in Davis for 25 years and I eat at Steve's more than any other place. I have always liked their Pizza's more than Woodstock's but I do enjoy the occasional super cheesy greasy pizza from there too. Village Bakery (the orginal, not the new restaurant) is also good but I have always preferred Steve's. The only place I like better is Symposium but it is a bit different. I don't know why people always complain about Steve's being expensive; their prices are pretty comparable to Woodstocks and Vitos for what you get (Village has always been a great deal.) The service is good most of the time. The atmosphere is good because unlike Woodstock's or Vito's, you don't have to shout at the person across the table just to be heard. And you're not sitting shoulder to shoulder with the table next to you. Their Happy Hour and Lunch Specials are some of the best in town. $5 for a small pizza or a huge sandwich is a steal. The Philly is not traditional but it's fantastic (though I admit, a bit greasy). Tuesday is a ridiculously good deal. Pizza taste is largely subjective, as you can tell by reading comments on this and other pizza places in town; but for my money, I like Steve's. —WillODonnell

2011-06-07 19:39:46   The chicken wings are amazing, waaaaay better then the breadsticks. —NikhilDahal

2011-07-24 23:54:49   Original Steve's is currently closed, but will open Wednesday 7/27. We are closed do to the instilation of new kitchen floors. Thank you for your patience and will see you on Wednesday. —Originalsteves

I can hardly wait. (It's Tuesday now.) —BruceHansen

You should have said Friday like the sign on the door says. -bh

2011-08-05 10:33:29   Breaks my heart to see all the negative comments about the staff, particularly management. Steve (and his sons) are true gentlemen, living the American dream with a great (delicious!) product, and a Davis community treasure. Best pizza in town, as it has been since it opened... just my opinion there, but what;s not in question is that the ingredients are always fresh, high quality. Wheat crust is delicious, if you're in to that. You'll pay a little more for pizza here, but again, in my humble opinion, it's worth it. My wife is a Ranch dressing fan, I'm not... but even I'll admit it is INCREDIBLE! Made fresh, dangerously addicting... and again, I don't even like Ranch. It's that good. Just make sure you don't get the blue cheese (if you want ranch of course), it's in the container right next to the ranch... just ask the staff which is which. So now for the obligatory history portion: When Steve's first opened, it was just the front section... the back room wasn't opened (built?) until the late 80's, I believe. —OldDavis73
