Davis Wiki hasn't made a concerted effort to do outreach and recruit new users for quite some time. In order to stay vibrant and make sure we have accurate information, we should keep trying to get a larger userbase. But since a lot of the main users don't actually live in Davis any more (thanks to student turnover), we're going to need people who actually live in Davis who are willing to talk to their neighbors about the awesomeness that is Davis Wiki.

Secondly, we need ideas. Off the top of my head:

  • Summer Advising
    • Also, intro weeks for the professional schools - law, vet, business... med?
  • Farmer's Market
  • Flyering Campus/Downtown
  • Getting wiki swag, like stickers and reusable grocery bags (see also: Wiki Community/Outreach/Fundraising)
  • Getting mainstream media attention
  • Talking with local business owners, and generally putting feet to pavement
  • work the Daviswiki into everyday conversations

So, what do we all see as workable? Who's willing to help out?

  • Don't have a lot of other ideas at the moment, but count me in. —TomGarberson
  • I think flyering, chatting with local business owners, and maybe the Farmer's Market are our best bets to getting fresh meat Wikians, in order of feasibility/effectiveness. I think our best time to flyer the campus and people onboard is at the start of the new school year/new school quarter, for obvious reasons. —AlexanderHo
  • I really like the idea of the reusable grocery bags. No idea of the costs, but it seems like they should be fairly inexpensive. What about getting a bunch and either giving them out or selling them at-cost at the Farmer's Market for a couple of weeks? We could also see whether downtown business owners would be interested in displaying and selling some. It could be a good way to both get public outreach and connect more with the business owners. —TomGarberson
