This is a municipal cemetery established  in 1861 and having its first burial in 1865. The cemetery catered for both Protestants and Catholics (initially in different plots).

There are many notable people buried in Dean's Grange including -

John Count McCormick (1884 - 1945), Tenor, Born Athlone Ireland

Sean Lemass (1899-1971), Taoiseach (Prime Minister of Ireland) 1959-66

John A Costello (1891-1976), Taoiseach (Prime Minister of Ireland) 1954-1957

Brian O'Nolan (1911-1966) aka Flann O'Brien, novelist, playright, newspaper contributor.

Joe McGrath , (1887-1966) politician, businessman, racehorse owner, founder of Irish Hospitals sweepstakes

Barry Fitzgerald (1888-1961), (William Joseph Shields) Actor

Noel Purcell (1900-1985), Actor

John Boyd Dunlop (d 1921) Inventor

Robert Praeger (1865-1953) naturalist, writer and librarian.

There are currently 600 burials a year at the cemetery.
