This is a municipal cemetery established in 1861 and having its first burial in 1865. The cemetery catered for both Protestants and Catholics (initially in different plots).

Joe McGrath , (1887-1966) politician, businessman, racehorse owner, founder of Irish Hospitals sweepstakes
Barry Fitzgerald (1888-1961), (William Joseph Shields) Actor
Noel Purcell (1900-1985), Actor
John Boyd Dunlop (d 1921) Inventor
Robert Praeger (1865-1953) naturalist, writer and librarian.
There are currently 600 burials a year at the cemetery.
