Arthur Hardy killed after car overturns

RAY BROOK - A 63-year-old Pelham Manor man apparently drowned when his car overturned in a swampy area between Saranac Lake and Tupper Lake early this morning.

Arthur H. Hardy Jr., who had a summer home on Upper Saranac Lake, was reportedly traveling east on Route 3, one-half mile east of Dugal Road, when he rounded a corner and went on to the shoulder of the road in the fog.

According to police the tentative cause of the accident which occurred at 12:45 a.m. was excessive speed.

State Police said he apparently tried to return to the road, began fishtailing, and went off the right side of the highway.

His convertible overturned and landed in approximately two feet of water. Hardy, who was belted in, was discovered with his head and shoulders submerged.

Hardy was taken to Mercy General Hospital in Tupper Lake where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy is being performed this morning to determine the cause of death.

Hardy lived on Corey Island in Upper Saranac Lake, which he once offered to a group of artists to stage an environmental art show called Island Eye Island Ear. However, Hardy's brother and sister, also owners of the island finally blocked the use of the private island for the show which became very controversial.

The art group was first prevented from holding the show on Bluff Island by the State of New York.

Finally the show was never held as a result of a long and public controversy involving the State, the Hardy family, and residents of the Upper Saranac Lake in 1979.
