Winthrop Carter Lockwood, known as Carter, was a son of H. W. Lockwood. Carter grew up in a house on Turtle Pond.

LOCKWOOD-W. Carter. 79, beloved husband of May Louise (Lou) Lockwood of Lake Placid, died at the Adirondack Medical Center on February 27, 2001. Carter was born on July 20, 1921 in Washington D. C., the son of H. Winthrop and Mary Carter Mullikin Lockwood. He attended Dartmouth College class of 1945 before serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps. In 1965 they moved to Lake Placid and Carter became bursar of Northwood School. During the 1980 Winter Olympics, he served as Assistant Chief of Protocol. He was a former member of the Pine Valley Golf Club and the Lake Placid Club and at the time of his death belonged to the Ponte Vedra Club and the Marsh Landing Country Club both in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. Besides his wife, Carter is survived by a brother Thomas Lockwood of Vero Beach, FL; three sons, Winthrop of Breckenridge, CO, Todd of Burlington, VT, and David of Manchester, NH; a son-in-law, Brownell Bailey of Denver, CO, and eleven grandchildren. A son, Herbert died in 1987 and a daughter, Frances Bailey died in 1989. A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 10, 2001 at 11:00 AM at St. Eustace Church in Lake Placid.
