Clarence Thomas was a dentist who cured in Saranac Lake from 1909-1914. His wife Ednah Merrill Thomas was a teacher.
Barbara Erickson wrote in April, 2020: "My grandfather [Clarence Thomas] died of TB in Saranac Lake. My grandmother came to Saranac Lake to be close by. She got herself a job teaching English at Saranac Lake High School. After he died she sent for their child, Merrill Thomas, who had been living with grandparents near Buffalo. He was age 9 at the time and so considered himself as growing up in Saranac Lake. Upon returning from college, he got a position at the Bank of Lake Placid (now NBT) where he met my mother, who grew up in Lake Placid."
