Howard McGill was a transport driver for James A. Latour & Company.  He also operated a septic service and built rustic furniture.

Howard A. McGill, 93, of Lake Clear, passed away on Dec. 27, 2021, at his residence in Lake Clear.

Born on Jan. 11, 1928, in Tupper Lake, he was the son of John and Bernadette (Brickey) McGill.

He married Shirley Duquette on May 20, 1950, in Saranac Lake. She predeceased him in 2016.

Howard was a transport driver for Latour Oil Company of Saranac Lake for many years and later worked for Rice Furniture. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and working in his workshop making many types of Adirondack furniture and he serviced the Saranac Lake area with his Honey Wagon business.

Survivors include his children, Andrew (Laurie) McGill of Saranac Inn, Hugh McGill of Saranac Lake, Peter McGill of Lake Clear, Maureen (Rick) Burngasser of Lake Clear, Bernadette (Teddy) Ratelle of Saranac Lake and Bill (Lisa) McGill of Saranac Lake; sisters Carol (Ken) Williams of Saranac Lake and Jacquline “Jackie” VanCour of Florida; grandchildren Shannon, Patrick, Corey, Kaleen, Jamie, Erica and Logan; nine great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, including a close relationship with his nephew Paul Williams; and his furry buddy, Lucy.

Howard was predeceased by his loving wife of 66 years, Shirley; his mother and father, Bernie and John McGill; brothers John “Jug” and Gerald “Pete” McGill; sisters: Colleen Finnigan, Zane McGill and Donna Law; and brothers-in-law Tom Finnigan and Ronald VanCour.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, 20 Church St., Saranac Lake.

Calling hours are scheduled for 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 3 at the funeral home, with a prayer service starting at 4 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4 at St. Paul’s Oratory in Bloomingdale with the Rev. Patrick Ratigan officiating. Burial will immediately follow at St. John’s in the Wilderness Cemetery in Lake Clear. The family is inviting all attendees to a reception following burial at the Town of Santa Clara Community Center in Saranac Inn. Masks are required by law to be worn at the church, no matter a person’s vaccination status.
