Joseph A. McKillip was a bobsledder. He was a son of  Francis Hubert McKillip of Bloomingdale.

LAKE PLACID - Joseph A. McKillip, 64, died Tuesday, June 10, 1997, at his home.

Born Oct. 11, 1932 in Saranac Lake, he was the son of F. Hubert McKillip and Mary Agnes (Newell) McKillip.

He attended Saranac Lake schools, and graduated from Saranac Lake High School in 1950. He later attended Sienna College for one year.

Mr. McKillip enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on April 1, 1954, and was honorably discharged on March 31, 1957 with the meritorious rank of sergeant.

He was married to the former B. Jill Shene of Lake Placid on July 12, 1958.

Mr. McKillip was employed by the Prudential Insurance Company, and also worked heavy construction as an operating engineer. He was also a licensed real estate salesperson with Century 21 Wilkins Agency from 1985 to 1993.

Mr. McKillip was the U.S. National Champion four-man bobsled driver from 1960 to 1966, and a driver for the U.S. bobsled team in 1963 at the World Championships in Innsbruck, Austria. He was the superintendent of the Olympic bob run in Lake Placid from 1973 to 1974. In 1976 he was named a member of the bobsled competition jury for the 1976 Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck, Austria, and the 1984 Olympic Winter Games in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. He was also the technical director for bobsled, Lake Placid Olympic Organizing Committee from 1977 to 1980.

He was an active member of the community serving on various boards and groups, including the Lake Placid Lions Club, Lake Placid Sports Council, Lake Placid Bobsled Club, American Legion Post 326. St. Agnes Parish Council, Elks Club, Knights of Columbus, and the Lake Placid Village Board.

Survivors include his wife; and family members including Elizabeth Cassese of Las Vegas. Nev., Daniel C. McKillip and Mary A. Fagan of Lake Placid.

He was predeceased by a brother, F. Hubert McKillip.

There will be no calling hours. A funeral service will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Agnes Church in Lake Placid.

In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to the High Peaks Hospice or the Lake Placid Ambulance Service.
