Kenneth Stephen Hoyt

Kenneth Stephen Hoyt, 84, of Landrum, South Carolina, originally of Saranac Lake, passed away Friday, Dec. 24 at RoseCrest Retirement Community in Inman, South Carolina.

Born on May 7, 1937, in Ticonderoga, he was the son of Stephen and Beulah Barnes Hoyt.

Kenn grew up in Saranac Lake and graduated from high school there in 1955. He earned an electrical engineering and economics degrees from Union College, Schenectady, in 1959. He remained grateful his whole life for the knowledge and strengths he gained at Union.

Kenn was married to his wife Lucy Hollands for 58 years.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Trevor (Yvonne) of Durham, North Carolina, and Justin (Tammy) of St. Louis, Missouri; grandson Garrett; granddaughter Zoe; and two sisters, Lilyann of Cocoa Beach, Florida, and Evelyn Ann Fitch (Robert) of Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Kenn’s varied career included employment with General Electric, the U.S. Army, Honeywell and ITT in electrical equipment, sales and marketing, and computers in Massachusetts, New York, Arizona and Florida prior to international work with Stromberg Carlson, and Plessey Telecommunications based in the U.S. and England. Finding the opportunities for travel compelling, Kenn joined Arthur D. Little, Inc. in Massachusetts and then Ascom AG in Bern, Switzerland, which resulted in work with companies from the People’s Republic of China to New Zealand and from South Africa to South America as well as Europe.

Upon settling in Tampa, Florida, he opened KSH International, Inc., a management consultancy focused on the telecommunications and data technology sectors. During this time he also served as gubernatorial appointee to the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council and was an active mentor in the Tampa chapter of SCORE helping small business owners.

Kenn believed strongly in the importance of education throughout one’s life and he gave freely of his time during his later years in Tampa to support organizations dedicated to education and culture. He was a founding member of the new Cultural Center in Carrollwood, Florida, and he enjoyed organizing charity golf tournaments for the All Sports Community Service Foundation, which helps young people fulfill their dreams of attending college. He was also active in the Tampa chapter of OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute). In his free time, Kenn loved cheering on the New York Yankees at Steinbrenner Field, as well as attending concert performances by the Florida Orchestra.

A private memorial is planned for summer.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to remember Kenn might consider making a donation in his memory to All Sports Community Service Foundation (allsportscommunity.com) or the Carrollwood Cultural Center (carrollwoodcenter.org).
