Margaret Roy was raised in Buffalo, where she studied violin. She earned a Master's degree in voice from New England Conservatory, and enjoyed a successful career as a contralto soloist and music educator. The family spent many summers at a state camp — Site #1392 on Second Pond near the south end of Lower Saranac Lake. In 1975 she moved to Saranac Lake, formed a construction company, and built the Tamarack Houses, an apartment complex which accomodated the medical staff of the 1980 Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid. In 1982 she opened a shop on Main Street, specializing in croissants and spirited truffles, called the Yum Yum Tree. She wrote a book of poetry, "I Fed My Children Summer," published by Black Fly Press in 1995.
