Patrick E. Keith was a World War II veteran.  He was a son of Elmore and Mary M. (Dyer) Keith.

SARANAC LAKE – Patrick E. Keith, 72, of Vermontville, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000 at the Adirondack Medical Center at Saranac Lake.

Born July 9, 1927 in Vermontville, he was the son of Elmore and Mary M. (Dyer) Keith.

Mr. Keith was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He had been employed by Gendron Lumber Co. in Saranac Lake as a carpenter and cabinetmaker for 22 years. Following that, he continued as a self-employed carpenter in the trade until he died. He operated his own sawmill and made various items out of wood, which he gave to his family and friends.

At one time, he had been active in the Boy Scouts, the 4-H Club and the Fish and Game Club. He was a communicant of St. Paul's Church in Bloomingdale and had been a trustee of the church as well as an active volunteer of the church food pantry, where he picked up surplus food, cooked, etc. He had been an assessor for the town of Franklin and enjoyed fishing and hunting. He taught many of his family members to shoot, made his own wine, raised seven foster children and was always there to help anyone in need. He and his wife operated the Keith Proprietary home for 25 years.

Survivors include his wife, the former Mary Ellen Goff, whom he married Aug 18, 1949 at St. Paul's Church; three sons and their wives, James and Rita Keith, Robert and Joannie Keith, and Arthur and Debbie Keith, all of Vermontville; six daughters and their husbands, Susan and Dennis Muzzy and Kathleen and Bradley Merrill, all of Vermontville; Elizabeth Baldwin of Yorktown, Va.; Mary Jo and Roger Rohe and Sara and George Besaw, both of Vermontville; Barbara and Jim Talley of Summerville, S.C.; a special son, Paul Allen of Tupper Lake; 21 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; one sister, Sister Charlotte Keith of St. Margaret's Convent, Lake Placid; one brother and his wife, Joseph and Emma Keith of Vermontville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son-in-law, Charles Baldwin, and two sisters: Anna and Catherine Keith.

Calling hours were from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p m Sunday at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake.

A Bible vigil was held at 8 p.m. Sunday. A Mass of Christian Burial was Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Church.

Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Vermontville in May.
