SARANAC LAKE - Santa M. Mitchell Elson, age 91, formerly of 6 1/2 St. Bernard Street, Saranac Lake, died Friday, Nov. 9, 2001 at the Meadow Brook Nursing Home in Plattsburgh.
Born in Bloomingdale on May 20, 1910, she was the daughter of Antonio and Santa Marie (Nasta) Alphonso.
She married Mike Mitchell in 1931. He predeceased her on Nov. 16, 1966. She later married Garl Elson in 1976. He predeceased her July 26, 1984.
She owned and operated Mike and Sandy's Restaurant and Shoe Repair business in the Effenbach Building on Broadway in. Saranac Lake for 40 years with her husband Mike. After Mike's death, she continued to run the business for a few years. She was a volunteer at the Saranac Lake Adult Center for several years and was a member of St. Bernard's Church.
She is survived by one brother, Eugene Alphonso of Lake Como, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Martinetti of New Hampshire and Mrs. Virginia Grew of Massena, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by four brothers: Anthony, Foster, Morris and Larino, and three sisters: Yolanda Benware, Julia Skiff and Antonette Francis.
Calling hours will be from to 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home Inc. in. Saranac Lake. A Bible vigil service is set to take place at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 12 at St. Bernard's Church with the Rev. Shane Lynch officiating. Burial will follow at St. Paul's Cemetery in Bloomingdale.
