The mining appears to have been started by B.F. Norman, whose farm had a large sand pit on the property.

Located at 909 State Route 3, Saranac Lake, the quarries have been here for some time, since at least the 1950s.  The operation is run by Upstone presently.

Operators in the area have include Normans Rock LLC and Trudeau Sand and Gravel.  Several hundred acres are involved. Trudeau owns 314 acres and Upstone, a national operation based in New Jersey, owns 280 acres.
