Bagel Cafe sells bagels and elaborate bagel sandwiches. They are normally open only for breakfast (6 am to 3 pm), and on weekends they are also open late (10 pm to 3 am). This means you can get a bagel when you are drunk and hungry, and also when you are hungover and hungry. In the small hours of the morning you can sometimes smell them baking their delicious bagels. Sandwich names include "Harvey Keitel", "Zoolander", and "Sex on a Bagel".

Carmen Lodise calls it "the best bagel café you’ll ever find".

History

On a rainy night in March 2013, by Britta Gustafson (CC BY-SA).Bagel Cafe was founded in 1991 and also sells bagels wholesale to local cafes, grocery stores, and hotels (including the Bacara Resort). Until 2005, the University's UCen Dining Services had a contract with Bagel Cafe to supply all of their bagel needs. This contract was replaced with Santa Barbara Bagel Company. Wes Hensley, manager of Bagel Cafe circulated a petition asking the University to reinstate their contract, but these efforts were rejected.

The owner of Bagel Cafe later opened two more, one in San Luis Obispo in 1995, and another in Los Angeles in 1999.

Before this location was Bagel Cafe, it was "a pizza joint called Pizza Express".

Bagels

Here's a home recipe that tries to be like Bagel Cafe sandwiches, and it's probably approximately correct because it includes lemon pepper.
