Added responses to my request for pediatric dentist recommendations Chris H 23 Aug 2008

Hello neighbors, we posted to the MLN email list a request for pediatric dentist recommendations. [WWW]http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mln/message/25083
Here are the replies to that request.

Also, the recommendation that we used was for Dr. Bar-Niv, listed below. He saw us after hours on the same day we called him. Our 11yr old had a canted baby tooth that would not come out, and our regular dentist and his backup were not available. Dr. Bar-Niv was great in every way, and took care of the problem to our satisfaction. His office is clean, bright and modern; only problem is that it is far away....at the corner of Central and Lawrence. Otherwise, we would switch to his practice.

Chris

Our family has been seeing Dr. Shirley Irudayaraj of Dove Dental Smiles for about 3 years now and we love her. She is never rushed and is very gentle when examining and scaling the teeth. She has state of the art technology and a small office and we have never had to wait to see her. Dr. Shirley and her husband Raj and their kids used to live in Monta Loma and they are a wonderful family. My kids (teenagers) have always had good experiences with her. I can't recommend her highly enough.

I have not had need for a pediatric dentist yet, as my twins are barely 9 months; however, through a parents of multiples group I belong to, I have seen this guy come highly recommended by many of the members:

Dr. Jamie Kelly at Pediatric Dentistry in Los Altos, 948-6884.

Regards,Lorie

We've been with Dr. Iverson in Palo Alto for three (and soon four) generations. He seems very nice, although I don't think he specializes in pediatrics.

Best regards,

Wouter

He is our family dentist, but was really great with my son as well as with our friends children.I highly recommend!

We see Nick Gorgani (he was recommended to me by my pediatrician) at the Pediatric Dentistry of Los Altos, 731 Altos Oaks Drive, Los Altos, (650) 948 - 6884.Before our first visit my son received a book about a boy named "xxxxxx" (your child's name will be inserted) that goes to the dentist and prepares them about what will happen. At the dentist they will take a picture that will go in the book. xxxxxx loves his book! After every visit, the kids get to pick out a toy. While they are in the chair the kids are watching a movie that is playing on a screen in the ceiling. My son LOVES it. He doesn't care at all what they do to him as long as he can watch the movie! I like the office too. I never have to wait more than 2 minutes and the dentist will explain everything to me.

We use Dr Kelly in los altos

[WWW]http://www.insiderpages.com/b/15238472688

my kids (4 and 6) love him.

I love our pediatric dentist- Dr. Gerber, in Menlo Park. He takes dental insurance, but our delta dental of California has failed to cover some of the work he's done. We first saw a pediatric dentist near El Camino hospital, but she wanted to do a bunch of dental work that I didn't think necessary at the time- considering my son was still 2 years old at the time. Dr. Gerber seems a but more conservative in his treatment plans. I love that he has three assistant and I can get all three of my kids teeth cleaned at the same time!

<daughter> sees Dr. James Kelly in Los Altos. His practice is on Altos Oaks and called “Pediatric Dentistry”. He is very hip—looks like a surfer—and has lots of giveaways. He seems very good so far (JA has seen him since the beginning). If that sounds like you’re cup of tea, you’ll find him in the yellow pages.

Warmly,

Mary A.

Hi Maria:
Three out of four in our household (including me) have had braces by Stacy Quo in PA. Excellent results.

Dr. Quo really good, though her practice is very busy. She really knows her stuff. Suggest you meet w/ her and see if you like her. Very gentle touch and instinctive about patient needs. However, much of work may be done by her assistants.

I have heard horror stories from my daughter's friends about other orthodontists (even in Los Altos) who make mistakes w/ their patients(!) who then need to have the work redone. It is worth it to go to the best orthodontist you can find.

-Good luck
-Elaine.

Hi Maria,

I went to Dr. Richard Ridgley near Stanford as an adult, about 12 years ago. I was happy with the results.

Hi Maria,
I've been going to doctor Paul Lee. He has two offices, one in Cupertino, one in Milpitas. Very experienced doctor.

Maria,
Dr. David Constant on Middlefield Rd in Palo Alto is terrific. My
daughter had her braces there and he also sees adults. In fact, I am
looking into doing Invisalign with him. My great dentist, Pete
Jollymour highly recommends Dr. Constant for kids AND adults.

Dr. Fella Benyammi

(650) 254-1596

Dr. Benyammi is a wonderful dentist. She has a very nice office next to El Camino hospital with an extremely friendly staff. They are multilingual, speaking English, French and Russian.

She's very gentle, has small hands (important to me anyway), is conservative, doesn't try to get you to do things that aren't absolutely necessary. I've been going to her for almost 10 years, and I think she's the best! Please tell her hello for me. I don't get anything for the referral except a thank you. - cjasper, 9/20/05

My wife and I really like him. Great staff and on time service as well
as having reasonable rates.

Susan Park

On Middlefield in Midtown Palo Alto or Dr.
Kahr (sp? pronounced like "care" and I can't think of
her first name at the moment) who is at the same
office. I went to Dr. Park for many, many years and
liked her (and I have lots of dental problems and hate
having my teeth worked on so that's saying something)
and then somehow ended up with Dr. Kahr for one
appointment and have stayed with her for a few years
now and like her a lot too. As for cleaning I like
both of their hygenists but maybe like Dr. Kahr's a
little better (probably why I've stayed with her).
Dr. Park's husband is the other dentist in the office
and I didn't like him as much but that's just gut
reaction/personality type thing, he may be a very good
dentist but I've only had a post-cleaning exam with
him, nothing more. The other two do very good work.

Bert D. Rouleau D.M.D., Orthodonist

He's excellent, does kids and adults (did my son's braces, my retainer), and has a well run, friendly office. And it's biking distance!<br>

Low-Cost Dentistry Suggestions

Several people responded to my request for low-cost dentistry for a low-income senior citizen in San Jose, and I posted their suggestions (numbered below) a couple of weeks ago. Now I've followed up on the suggestions and have more information. I thought some others in the neighborhood might be able to benefit from this info, so it's included below each numbered item. [posted by cjasper 10/15/08]

1. Check with the Mountain View Senior Center, and if they have one, the San Jose Senior Center for any pointers to resources they can offer. Likewise, ask the Community Services Agency for their pointers.

Called the one in Willow Glen, and they said to call the Council on Aging - (408) 296-8290. Called and left a

message for Larry (408-350-3292). He called me back with this info:

Dental Society of Santa Clara County refers to dentists who give senior discounts: (408) 289-1480:

St. James Clinic, 55 East Julian, San Jose, provides complete dental services for low-income people

(408) 918-2626 - called and got this info:

Bring proof of monthly income, and they determine which of three programs you fit into:

They provide major services (bridges, crowns, etc), but no discount applies.

  • Referred by zip code to Dr. Richard Ravizza - (408) 286-0617, who gives senior discounts but not sure how much.

Tried calling, but they're away until Oct 28.

$155 - exam & xrays (which is what they do at first visit)

      $90 - cleaning

      $90 - filling

$45 flat rate per visit for basic services (exam, xrays, cleaning, fillings)

        50% off basic services

        25% off basic services

        2. Periodically, on my walks between my home and the downtown Caltrain station I see a mobile dental care vehicle (essentially a specially outfitted RV) parked at the Santa Clara County Social Services Agency facility between Moffett Blvd. and Stierlin Rd. just north of Central Expressway. Not sure whether it is just for kids or all ages. The markings on it indicate it is part of a program provided by the County's Health System (which operates Valley Medical Center). Not sure exactly who to contact about that, but maybe someone at VMC or SCCSSA can enlighten you.

Said to call the Ronald MacDonald mobile dental van. Called - the mobile dental van goes to Sunnyvale,

Mtn. View, and Palo Alto only. But she can go to the Tully Road clinic in San Jose. They will bill

her directly unless she's on Medi-Cal, in which case, they bill Medi-Cal, which covers most services

fully (not all - didn't get a list of what they do and do not cover, but it's certainly better than

        she'd pay without Medi-Cal, I'm sure).

          3. I have been told (by someone in the southeast U.S.) that some dentists will do pro bono work for indigent patients or those with limited means to pay. I guess here in California I would check on public health programs first, but you might consider approaching individual dentists if all else fails.

Not enough info to look into.

            4. DeAnza/Foothill has a dental hygiene program that is inexpensive. SF has two dental schools that charge about half off and are quite time consuming with many trips. Avenidas has a program for low income seniors that will hook you up with the local dental society where they do stainless steel crowns and other such quick fix solutions.

DeAnza does not have a dental hygiene program. Foothill does. Cleaning costs $30, no matter how

many appts it takes to get it done. Xrays cost $5-40.

              5. The dentist I know is Dr. Donna Cotner, and her telephone number is 408-255-2550. She will give a discount to low income people. She is located near Steven Creek Dam, and the end of Foothill expressway area. I have referred others to her and they were very happy to have her as their dentist. She is a very caring dentist and will work with your sister on a payment plan. The only other alternative is using the USC in San Francisco, where they do it for less.

Charges $75 for exam + $95 for cleaning - will give a 10% discount for low income people. That's

$153 - no savings at all. My dentist charges me $150 for exam and cleaning.

                6. You might try checking San Jose City College or SJSU etc. I know Foothill has a dental hygienist program and I seem to recall that they give cleanings on occasion but you might check with them. You also might check w/your dentist; he/she might have some insight into good dentists that will help.

SJSU - No dental hygiene program.

SJCC - Have a dental assistant program, not dental hygiene - no dental services offered.

                  SCU - No dental programs.
