East Oakland Art Scene
Burners have populated the industrial warehouses of East Oakland for many years. There's also a thriving mural arts scene in this traditionally African-American and Latino neighborhood and organization like the EastSide Arts Alliance involve themselves in positive social change as well as awesome mural art. Hip Hop heads will be happy to know that Souls of Mischief come from East Oakland.
Music collectives, hacker houses, and artists' studios dot the "Middle East" and Jingletown. As the real estate market heats up in Oakland and San Francisco, new waves of creatives on a waiter's salary are moving to East Oakland. There's been an uptick in music events here lately, and many people say East Oakland reminds them of the Mission in the 1990's.
Let's hope the waves of artists do not spawn too much negative gentrification.
