Overview

Moline was incorporated in 1848.  Situated between the banks of the Rock River and the Mississippi River in Rock Island County, Illinois, Moline provided ideal farming and fishing for Sauk and Meskwaki Indians.  Violent confrontations occurred in the early 19th century between these indigenous peoples and European settlers, and Chief Black Hawk declared war in 1832.  The war ended that year, forcing Black Hawk north.  Five years later, the Sylvan Slough was built, connecting the Mississippi's southern bank to what is now called the Rock Island Arsenal.  Moline's economic past centers on the farm implement industry with the presence of companies like John Deere, Alcoa, and International Harvester.  The 1980's farm crisis caused huge layoffs and a population decline.  To address these issues, the city initiated a riverfront redevelopment, in which vacant factories were demolished to be replaced by civic centers, like the iWireless Center.  Development continues today as a part of Moline Centre's Downtown Plan.
