Downtown Raleigh needs a grocery store.

Driving or a long walk, the closest grocery store used to be the one in Seaboard Station, but it has since closed. There is a Harris Teeter and a Fresh Market in Cameron Village and a Kroger and Trader Joe's off of Wake Forest, as well as others in different directions, but all driving distance, not walking. Cameron Village is a quick bus ride from downtown via the #12 or #16 bus depending on where you are located.

City Market Produce sells fresh produce at the corner of Blake and Davie St. They are open Thurs-Saturday.

Developing Plans for a store 'near downtown'

Plans are preliminary and subject to city approval, but Market Restaurant owner Chad McIntyre hopes to add a food market to his business plan when he relocates the restaurant to Person Street Plaza this year.

Located near William Peace University just outside downtown Raleigh, the bodega-style store would focus on meat, dairy products and fresh produce from local farmers.

Here's the full story as reported in the N&O.
