Bioregional Groups and Contacts

There are a variety of bioregional groups that raise awareness of problems in our ecosystem and help deliver sustainability projects but the most well known local group is Santa Cruz Mountains Bioregional Council (SCMBC). The Santa Cruz Mountains Bioregion includes all of San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Cruz counties as well as part of the Santa Clara County. SCMBS is a nonprofit organization with natural resource professionals whose main objective is to help conserve native plant and animal biodiversity in the Santa Cruz Mountains Bioregion.

Others groups include internationals ones such as Bioregional. Bioregional North America and Bioregional Development Group United Kingdom are branches under it that serve specific areas or countries. For 18 years, these groups have been contributing to sustainability projects from 10-year sustainability action plans to Discovery's "ecolifestyle" TV series. They provide a wide range of services to help companies and communities move toward a more sustainable work area.

Many of us are capable of largely contributing toward sustainability but most of us are not motivated to do so. If trying to join and contribute to one of these groups does not fit your schedule or does not suit you, try starting off small. Simple habits in your own household can make a huge difference in both, the short run and the long run. Some ideas can include: unplugging cords that are not in use, changing to a water-conserving shower head, using a drip irrigation system for your garden, taking the bus or carpooling to work every few days, etc. The list can be infinite but it is our duty as people of our communities, to make these communities last as long as possible with as little waste as possible and it can all start with simple tasks at home. If you are interested in going above and beyond, which we all should, try contributing more and contact one of the bioregional groups by going on their website.
