Home Savings of America came to Santa Cruz by building a branch on Ocean Street in Santa Cruz. They were once one of the largest Savings and Loan companies in the USA. They expanded by buying companies such as: Irvine Thrift, Bowery Savings Bank in New York, County Bank of Santa Barbara, Western Federal Savings and Loan, Coast Federal Bank, and HomeFed Bank. In 1998 Washington Mutual purchased Home Savings of America, including the branches in Santa Cruz. After the purchase Washington Mutual closed the Washington Mutual branch on 75 River Street and moved the accounts to the newly acquired branch on 730 Ocean Street. Washington Mutual was acquired by Chase in 2008.

Home Savings of America was a company known for supporting the arts. Almost every branch has some type of mosaic, statue or commissioned painting.
