The Freecycle Network

The Freecycle Network is made up of more than 5,000 groups with more than 9 million members worldwide. It's a grassroots, nonprofit movement of people who are giving (and getting) stuff for free in their own towns and thus keeping good stuff out of landfills. Membership is free, and everything posted must be FREE, legal and appropriate for all ages. To view the items being given away or sought in Tallahassee, you must be a member of one of the local groups.  There are a few freecycle groups in the area, including Tallahassee Freecycle, Tallahassee Freeshare, Tallahassee and you can find other nearby groups using the Freecycle Group Finder. Once you join the group (for free), to give away something you want to get rid of, you just post a brief message describing your item and where you're located. People give away everything from old appliances, clothes, books and yard equipment to even things like a pile of dirt they want moved off their property. Chances are if you have something you don't want anymore, there's someone out there who does. It feels good to give something away directly to someone else who has a use for it rather than just dropping it at a donation center and wondering what ever really happens to it. You can even post "curb alerts" to let members know about something you've set out on your curb for first-come, first-served takers. And if there's something you're in search of but don't have the time or energy to comb through yard sales, you can post a "wanted" message in case a member has what you want but just hasn't put it up for grabs yet. The most active Freecyclers monitor posts constantly, so you have to be vigilant when there's something you really want. So, get out there and start freecycling your way to a cleaner garage and closets, and know that you're helping your neighbors and Mother Nature at the same time!
