History

The original settler was Captain John Denison who was a United Empire Loyalist. He purchased local property in 1804.

The Denison Family contributed to Toronto's early political and military affairs and came to be influential members of the Toronto establishment.

The Denison Family also owned large parcels of land in downtown Toronto, Richmond Hill, and along the Humber River south of Lawrence Avenue where Denison Avenue is situated today.

St. John’s Cemetery on the Humber is located at the end of Denison Road. It overlooks the Humber River Valley and has served as the private cemetery for members of the Denison Family since 1861.

Family members continued to own property in the neighbourhood right up until the early 1930's.

Beginning in the 1940's residential subdivisions began being developed around the neighbourhood.

Parks and Recreation

There are five parks in and about the neighbourhood, including the Westview greenbelt, Westview Park and Amesbury Park. Because there are pockets of what passes as old growth trees within Toronto, such large treed areas have prevented development and construction around Amesbury.

Amesbury Park has a baseball diamond, Tennis Courts, and a children's playground.

Amesbury Community Centre is beside the park.
