SUMMARY PAGE

Aim of this Article

These articles are for the purpose of displaying, preserving, extrapolating on & sharing these collections related to our LIEBELT & FAEHRMANN ancestors [& current relatives  in Germany] in Prussia & descendants in Hahndorf, South Australia.

1.    Parents:  Johann Christian FÄHRMANN 1754-1796 & Katharina Marie KÖHNEN of Rohrbeck, Brandenburg, Prussia.

Were your ancestors on the 'Zebra'

Tangermüde FAEHRMANN’s.   This article takes us to the church on Rohrbeck, 33kms north of Tangermünde where my gggg grandfather [Johann Christian FÄHRMANN] married in 1787, 236 years ago, meet his other descendants who had no idea in 2018 that they had relatives in Australia.  Meet his wife & five sons, read the 1849 "Emigrants Guide to South Australia", written by George DOEGER & published in Tangermünde, see the original records from the Saint Stephens Kirche in Tangermünde.  Visit Fischbeck, Gross Ellingen, Dömitz, Schönhausen, Cabelitz, Neuendorf in Speck, all near the Elbe River & then visit the descendants' graves in Caloote, Palmer & Hahndorf, South Australia.

Jerichow Monastery

Jerichow village.   Here we meet Johann Friedrich FÄHRMANN & Wilhelmine VOIGT whose 3 children & 8 grandchildren were born in Jerichow between 1800-1887.  There will be a stroll through the village, visit the Dutch windmill of the 1700's, & at the Rathaus we meet Minna SCHULZE, a baby born enroute [Ship 'Eduard'] to South Australia and whose parents [SCHULZE & LITZMANN] came from the small village of Cade in 1878.  See how the Jerichow archivist celebrates this birth, & perhaps help find her descendants in the Eudunda area of South Australia.

2.   Johann Christoph LIEBELT 1775-1846 & Anna Elisabeth STEINBORN 1769-1857

[2nd son: Johann Christian LIEBELT 1801-1858 & Maria Elisabeth KUCHEL 1798-1879]

Johanna Eleonore LIEBELT 1833-1914  [2nd son, 3rd child]

Eleonore was 5 years old on the 'Zebra', she inherited 108 Main Rd & other land in Hahndorf from her parents, & this article looks at all the Certificate of Titles.  She was almost hit by a spear thrown at her & later suffered an agonising death as remembered by descendants & reported by the Mount Barker Courier.   Eleonore married:

Johann Carl Friedrich FÄHRMANN 1823-1896

Talking about Tangermünde:  Tangermünde on the Elbe River, SE of Berlin, where Carl learnt his carpentry trade, where his FÄHRMANN relatives currently live & photographs of why this place is so special.

Time-Line:  Here is a dated 'time-line' that follows the carpentry career of Carl & his children, his projects with GLADIGAU, his timber licence, the construction dates of the known buildings he was involved with: WITTWER's Hahndorf Mill, St Michael's Church & the St Paul's Church of England.  In 1879 Carl is teaching F. DAHL carpentering.  I explore the working lives, addresses & trades of the 6 FAEHRMANN sons.  In the 'time line' for 1894, Carl's 5th child, August Friedrich FAEHRMANN is accused of an assault at the German Arms Hotel, witnessed by one of his brothers. We take a walk around Tangermünde, Germany, and also see a display of examined & documented tools that Carl owned.  There is a copy of his naturalisation certificate & his last Will.

J.C.F. FAEHRMANN's Built Legacy by Lothar BRASSE

Facing Lubasch's barn, built by Faehrmann, what am I looking at?

This article introduces you to Johann Carl Friedrich FAEHRMANN and discusses the assertion of Oswald Friedrich FAEHRMANN that his grandfather built the Paechtown houses.  It traces the architecture of half timbered houses & barns in Friedrichstadt, Paechtown & Hahndorf.  It draws on previous sketches, studies & power point presentations by Lothar BRASSE.

J.C.F. FÄHRMANN's tools.

This article displays photographs of the tools held, until 2022, by his great grandson, Allan REDDY, at that time in a box with a small explanation card on it.  They have since been donated to the Hahndorf Academy, South Australia, for use in their displays of Hahndorf German history and should be available for any descendant or interested person to view in person.

Carpenters symbols.

"Zimmerer-Werkzeichen = Carpenter’s markings or carpentry symbols"  This article provides visuals of the numerous 'carpenters marks'  found on red gum beams in homes, attics & barns in the Friedrichstadt, Paechtown, Hahndorf & Blakiston area.  It then provides a comparison of the many homes in the Tangermünde area which share the same symbols, still visible on Oak beams after 260 years.

8.  Nickolaus Friederich Carl FAEHRMANN 1872-1906 & Mary Jane JONES 1867-1942  part 1 of 3  In this article there are photographs of the blacksmith business in front of 108 Main St, Hahndorf, one photo shows Nickolaus with his 2 children just a year before his tragic death.  You can read an interesting story [involving a number of Hahndorf families], of how, known as 'Fritz', at 16 years of age in 1888, he was found guilt of assault and as a result we look at the WALTROWICZ, GALLASCH, MARTIN, PANJAS, WILLEMER & GREGOR, RODER & THIELE families. I also explore the working relationship between Nickolaus's father & the WILLIMERS.  I trace Fritz's wedding, wife & the birth of their 3 children, & in some detail the origins & history of the 2 adjoining blocks of land 108 & 106 Main St, Hahndorf. Three newspapers reported on 34 year old Nickolaus's tragic death including the horrible injuries to his helper Charles HIGGINS.&  Mary Jane JONES & the life of the Hahndorf Blacksmith at 106 then 108 Main St Hahndorf.

9.   'Fritz' FAEHRMANN  Blacksmith Records  part 2 of 3.   These scanned Hahndorf blacksmith records were filled out daily by Nickolaus FAEHRMANN & date from 1 October 1901 until page 239 on 3 June 1905.  This inventory records hundreds of interactions with his customers, many of whom descend from 'Zebra' passengers. Each page is fascinating, a tribute to Beryl BENHAM who has guardianship of her grandfather's documents.  The following family names are mentioned in this article:    ALSON, AURICH, BRAENDLER, BARBER, BRATAG, BOWDEN, BEAUMONT, BOEHM, BENNETT, BEARE, BERRY, BARTLETT, CAREY, CASH,  CHILDS, CONSTABLE, CLOUSHOLM, CONSAY, DAHL, DARBY, DELAYNE, DAINTY, DELAINY, DEIMEL, DIETRICH, DRUTE, EDWARDS, EY, FAEHRMANN, FAULKNER, FICHTNER, FIX, FISHER, GALLASCH, GREGOR, GRIVELL, GIBBONS, GRAY, GUERIN, HAINES, HARE, HEINRICH, HUBBIS, HALL, HILLMAN, HAIR, HOOD, JAMES, JACOBSON, JAENSCH KELCY, KRAMM, KÖRBER, KOEGER,  KUCHEL, LAUGHS, LIEBELT, LUENERT, LEOPOLT, LAUCH, MANGELSDORF, MARTIN, MATTFELDT, McKENZIE, MILLS, MOONIE, MOONEY, MUELLER, MITCHELL, MEYERS, NITSCHKE, OLSON, PAECH, PADE, PAIN, PFENNIG, PEPPER, PORTIS, PEAKE, RAETHKE, REIMANN, ROEGER, ROLACH, RUGE, RUNDLE, ROTHE, RUDD, SANDOW, SCHUNKE, SCHMISZ, SCHMIDTKE, SCHMISY, SCHNEEMIULCH, SCHEMES, SONNEMANN, SOMMEMANN, STORCH, STIGWOOD, STREMPEL, SAUNDERCOCK, SPOEHR, THIELE, TRELOAR, VAN der MOLEN, WATTS, WALTROWITZ, WALTROWITY, WEST, WITTWER, WILSON, WHIBLY, 'Fritz' FAEHRMANN

3.    FAEHRMANN Collection in State Library of SA.

In 1988 J.P. MULDER provided the SLSA with documents & publications recovered from a cottage in Aurich Rd, Hahndorf.  It includes memorium cards, christening & confirmation papers, songbooks, tax return and a letter.  A 1793, 'Biblische Predigten & Gesangbücher' inscribed with births & deaths from 1841-1853.  A song book present to Marie Hermine Hilda FAEHRMANN by her mother in 1900 & Cash Books 1891-1896 & 1946-1970.

4.    Otto August Ferdinand FAEHRMANN

Otto August Ferdinand is the half brother of JCF FÄHRMANN & arrived as an eight year old with his mother & step father on the La Rochelle in September 1855.  By pure chance I came across his mothers broken & unkempt grave site in the Palmer Cemetery.  Otto is buried with his family members in the Caloote Cemetery.  Otto was an early pioneer of Palmer/Caloote but possibly spent the immediate years after his arrival in Hahndorf possibly living with his newly married brother J.C.F. FAEHRMANN.
