‘The Corsair presents quite a Noah’s Ark looking appearance, having on board a motley congregation of animals of almost every name … She is steamer built and is destined to ply by steam from shore to shore when she gets to Australia. She is, however, at present constructed as a three-masted schooner, and is intended to sail to the new country. She has paddle boxes without wheels, a huge smokeless funnel rigged aloft … while her comparatively puny sailing gear does not seem to us capable of being so trimmed as to waft her to the far south …’ Adelaide Chronicle 10/2/1841. ‘She has on board seven horses, a quantity of other stock of various kinds, and a cargo of merchandise’. During March 1841, the Corsair had her masts taken out at Pt Adelaide and was fitted up for steam.

SHIP JOHN COOPER -

14 + cabin, 20+ intermediate + unnamed number steerage passengers (c90 passengers) from Greenock, Cork and Lisbon 8/3/1841

SALMON, Captain James

The John Cooper is a splendid ship, and would have made one of the quickest passages ever known, had we been at all favoured with good winds; these, however, upon the whole, were exceedingly variable and contrary … The JC got up beautifully to this place, without touching the ground, and now lies in perfect safety within a few yards of the shore. She is one of the largest and finest vessels which ever came to the Port; and it is a subject of congratulation, to think, (after the curious reports at home relative to this Port) that such a large ship came up, and now lies here as snug as if she were in the London Docks …’ SA News p28.
