The University of Michigan Duderstadt Center was constructed in 1995 as the Media Union to serve as the library for the engineering, art, and architecture & urban planning schools, as well as containing general use computer labs and research facilities, such as the virtual reality cave. The Mujo Cafe coffee shop is on the ground floor, facing the North Campus Diag. As a "union", rather than a "library", the media union is no place for quiet study, but features many long tables for group work.

The media union is easily criticized for its layout - many observers note that this library relegates all of its books to the basement, reserving upper floors mainly for computers (and journals). The arrangement of the upper floors along diagonal, northeast-southwest and northwest-southeast axes additionally requires some effort at orientation, particularly when trying to figure out which printer you just sent your paper to.

In 2004, the Media Union was rebranded as the Duderstadt Center, in honor of President Emeritus James Duderstadt.
