Pacific Beach Burritos is now closed.

How it was

Pacific Beach Burrito opened in early 2010 in a former Pizza Hut(?) on Washtenaw Avenue, just east of Ypsi-Arbor Lanes, joining other notable re-purposings of fast food structures in the area. (E.g. Tuptim Thai, a.k.a. "Long John Thai".) Prices are in the range of $5 per person and below, with chicken, pork, steak, chicken, fish and shrimp tacos available in flour or corn tortillas, a dozen burrito options, and several addition menu items. While sources like Yelp have noted some "opening pains" (for example, taco prices ticked upwards by 10-20 cents a month after opening), reviews are generally positive for PBB in the realm of "fast, cheap, good".

With tacos in the range of $1 - $1.50, and a drive-thru, Pacific Beach seems to have made aggressive inroads on the strip. Prices are comparable to the Taco Bell just to the east, making PBB seem to many the final straw in Tios' March 2010 decision to close their Ypsi branch. (In an AnnArbor.com article on the closing, Tios' owners said the economy meant Ypsilanti was "just getting killed" - several dozen commentors quickly jumped in to note better value and/or quality at nearby competitors like PBB.)

Pacific Beach purports to be a San Diego-style taqueria, a niche apparently represented by the "San Diego Burrito" - carne asada, french fries, and nacho cheese wrapped into a burrito.

Reviews

I had been waiting for this place to open for awhile - ever since I noticed the abandoned Pizza Hut had a fancy new sign. Now it is happily referred to as "Taco Hut" amongst my group of friends. (4 star review)
