The Silver Laundry was built at 36 Charles Street by William S. Silver in 1913. It was later operated by his daughter, Edythe S. Smith. It was destroyed in a spectacular fire on June 12, 1955; the Smith home nearby was saved. At the time of its destruction, it employed 16 to 18 workers during its busy season. 1

After the fire, the Troy Laundry offered the use of its facilities to Mrs. Smith. There were initially plans to rebuild, but in November 1955 it was merged with the Troy Laundry. 2 A local twelve year old boy later confessed to setting the fires. 3
