Resumes

Finding jobs can be a stressful part of being an adult, however, there are a few things you can do to increase your chances of landing a job. One of the first things you can do is develop a resume that lays out your specific job skills. You can find resume templates on a variety of sites and Microsoft Word. These layout suggestions can help alleviate the stress of starting from scratch. With a resume, you have an option of four main layouts.

These include; chronological, functional, combination, and targeted.

  • In a chronological resume style, you are putting all your work experience in the exact order you have done it. Your work experience can include full-time jobs, part-time jobs, and volunteer experience. If a chronological resume does not feel like an ideal fit, you could try a functional resume.
  • With functional resumes, you base your layout on skills gained. These can be nice to tailor all your experience to a specific job position. If you like the sound of the chronological and functional resume, you could try the combination resume.
  • With a combination resume, you will list your critical skills and traits and then your work experience in chronological order.
  • A targeted resume will be target specifically to the desired position. You can include all your skills, related work experience, and related awards you may have won. For individuals looking to layout the skills they have, it is important to include a balance of both hard and soft skills. Hard skills are easy to prove. This could be proficiency in using a program or a certification.

Skills to Include on a Resume

Soft skills are skills that are not as easy to prove. These include skills such as adaptability, people skills, and leadership.

Interviewing

The next step in obtaining your job will be an interview. When preparing for an interview, try to find the most common interview questions for the position you have applied for. Practice these questions with a friend or family member to get comfortable answering them. You will also want to keep the job responsibilities in mind when tailoring your answers to the position. If your interview is in person or over Skype, remember to dress for the job you want, not the job you have. More information on the type of interviews you may come across can be found here.

Networking

Networking can be described in a variety of ways. You can find good information on networking here and here. Some individuals will choose to utilize websites such as LinkedIn to build a network of professional connections.
