(510) is the Legacy land line three digit telephone area code for the East BayFrom 1947 until September 2, 1991, Oakland was included in the 415 area code, which is now home only to San Francisco and Marin.  On March 14, 1998, the 510 code was itself split along the top of the East Bay Hills, with everything on the east of the ridge line put into the newly created 925 area code -- which, you will notice, is the sum of 415 and 510.
