The Dr. William Bamford House was the home of, you guessed it, Dr. William Bamford! Dr. Bamford (June 6, 1820 – October 10, 1881) was a physician and surgeon who was a member of the California State Medical Association and the Alameda County Medical Association. On February 16, 1857, William Bamford and Cornelia Elizabeth Rand were married in Santa Rosa, California.
Dr. Bamford's long career as a physician finally brought him to practice medicine in East Oakland, after practicing in Santa Rosa, Healdsburg, San Francisco, and Ione.
One of his most famous patients was Robert Louis Stevenson, "who afterwards gave Dr. Bamford one of his works with an inscription on the fly leaf that but for Dr. Bamford's skill this would have been the writer's last book." 1
On November 17, 1981 the Dr. William Bamford House was designated Oakland Landmark #53, under Zoning Case #LM 81-231.
