Kate E. Kirkham 1
Kate Edith Kirkham (1823–1897, born Catherine Edith Mix) was the founder of the Fabiola Association which founded Fabiola Hospital. She learned of the need for a local hospital after witnessing a terrible carriage accident.
Kate met Ralph W. Kirkham (1821-1893) while he was a captain stationed at Fort Gibson in the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, and Ralph said it was love at first sight. After several moves, Kate and Ralph moved to a large home at 9th & Fallon Streets where they raised four daughters: Julia, (Mary) Leila, May and Kate. Ralph eventually rose to the rank of general.
In 1876, Kate learned of the need for a local hospital after witnessing a terrible carriage accident. The victim had to be transported 10 miles to a hospital in San Leandro. $50 was collected from 18 of her women friends and the Fabiola Association was formed. The focus of the group was to provide medical assistance for all, regardless of financial circumstances. Kate served as the first president of the hospital.
Kate died in 1897, and is buried next to Ralph in plot 6 at Mountain View Cemetery.
