Sacramento has a historic underground "city" of sorts underneath the normal, everyday Sacramento that we see. Originally, the downtown surface level was about one story lower than it is now. The entire city was raised between the years of 1864 and 1877 to reduce the risk of flooding, and portions of the original street level still exist in the form of basements and interconnecting tunnels. The tunnel system was once fairly extensive, but much of it has been gradually filled in over the years. Most of the existing tunnels are found in Old Sacramento and the central downtown area. There have been special tours of the underground in the past, but despite much speculation, there does not seem to be any reliable plans for regularly scheduled tours in the future.

  • They are now doing the underground tours on the weekends until Halloween, then they plan on starting up again in April 2011 and continuing indefinitely. -leiris
