There were five locations of Blockbuster stores in Santa Cruz County. The franchise in downtown Santa Cruz converted to an independent record/movie store after a few months as a Blockbuster/record store.
Blockbuster was a video rental chain. In 2004, there were 9,000 stores. Blockbuster was purchased by Dish Network Corporation in April 2011 at a bankruptcy auction. The old Blockbuster, Inc. is no more.
All Blockbuster stores across the U.S. stopped honoring Blockbuster gift cards on 04/07/2011. This was due to their bankruptcy proceedings.
In January 2013, Dish Network Corporation announced that the Blockbuster Watsonville, California location was one of the 300 closures to occur in April 2013 The entire chain of Blockbuster stores closed in November 2013. About 300 stores nationwide. A few stayed open until 2014 to sell the remaining stock. Some stores still kept the name and continued renting movies under the name Blockbuster.
As of 2017, in Alaska, there is still Blockbuster stores. These reorganized after the 2013 closure, and continue to rent movies. In Alaska, internet access is expensive and not as common as the rest of the country.
