Buzzard's Roost is the hike with the steepest grade in Big Basin Redwoods State Park, and the reward for making it to the 2150 foot elevation peak is the great 360 degree view of the Santa Cruz Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. On very hot days, watch out for Rattlesnakes and bring plenty of drinking water. The park headquarters is at about 1000 feet elevation, so plan for hiking 1150 feet in elevation to get to Buzzard's Roost. To reach the top, take the Pine Mountain Trail all the way up. It can be reached from the Visitor's Center by either taking the Skyline to the Sea Trail to Pine Mountain Road or by taking the Redwood Trail to Blooms Creek Campground and then crossing over to the Blooms Creek Trail. The hike is about 5 miles roundtrip and is rated moderate to strenuous by most hiking guides.
