Tartine is one of the best places in San Francisco for delicious pastries. The morning buns, especially, are worth getting. They are like cinnamon rolls on steroids - sticky, creamy, orangey, sugary.
Tartine is almost always crowded, with a line for pastries unless you get there really early in the morning just as they open. Early morning pastries from Tartine brought to your door = love, although you need to hustle, because looking at the butter soaking through the brown paper bags can be... unnerving.
They also make some mean sandwiches, which come with adorable house pickles.
The bagged spiced nuts are a little underseasoned salt-wise, but pack quite a punch capsaicinally, so be careful.
They have some smaller cafe-type tables, but also have a long large cafeteria-style table, which is communal (or, if you have a large party, you could just dominate it).
