PRESS CONFERENCE

DEMANDING

"CLEAN-UP ASSURANCES"

Residents, living near and around the designated temporary garbage dump sites, are "demanding clean-up assurances" from the City of Toronto and the Provincial Government. These assurances demand that the each temporary garbage dump site:

  • will be cleaned of all garbage and infestation
  • will be tested for toxic contamination, including the surrounding areas, where pesticide spraying and run-off has occurred, continually monitored for future contamination
  • will use environmentally sensitive methods to clean areas that have been contaminated

In addition, the health and well being of the residents should be factored in. Any current or future adverse health conditions as a result of living near these temporary garbage dump sites must addressed.

We feel that the Mayor of Toronto, David Miller, the Premier of Ontario, the Right Honourable Dalton McGuinty, Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. David McKeown take the responsibility for allowing this dumping to take place and for not looking at the best interest of the citizens of Toronto. We also look to the both the Minister of the Environment, The Honourable John Gerretsen and the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care for Ontario, The Honourable David Caplan, to take accountability and support us in our efforts.

OTHER CONCERNS AND COMMENTS:

  • The Strike should have been avoided, affecting our 3 most vulnerable groups, the children, the seniors and the poor, both physically and emotionally.
  • Residents wanting to know, how were each temporary garbage sites chosen??
  • Why did Moss Park continue to operate as a garbage dump, if it didn’t meet all four requirements?
