Pagoda Trees or Necklacepod Trees are trees in the genus Styphnolobium of the Faboideae subfamily of the pea family (Fabaceae). Other members of the Faboideae subfamily of the pea family include peas, milk vetch, lupines, scurfpeas, trefoils, clover, locust trees, camel thorn, and rattlebox.
Japanese Pagoda Tree (Styphnolobium japonicum) is a deciduous tree from China. It grows about 30 to 65 feet tall. It has "perfect" flowers (containing both male and female parts). Japanese Pagoda Tree is ranked 5 out of 10 on the Ogren Plant Allergy Scale, indicating a mild to moderate tendency to cause hay fever. It is planted in Freeman Park and Ralph Harris Park. It is also planted as a street tree on 2nd Street, Beamer Street, Court Street, Johnston Street, and North Street.
