Benjamin Berry was an African-American man who came to California as a slave of the Holloway family. After obtaining his freedom from the Holloways, he purchased the U. S. Patent on 160 acres of land for farming (sw/4 section 13 of 13 N 4 E, issued June 1, 1873).
