Safeway is a large chain of grocery stores. Most stores are located in Northern California and the Western US. There are no Safeways in Southern California, but Safeway owns Vons and Pavilions stores in that region. Chico is home to three stores, located in Central Chico, West Chico and Central Chico (South Chico is not served by a Safeway store). The first Safeway was at 5th Street and Normal Avenue, in the current location of 5th Street Steak House. They are a full service grocery store, with all of the amenities one would expect to find. The advertised specials that are found in the newspaper and mail are limited to their "Club Card" members, which requires giving them a name, address and phone number.(Which you can make up. Or you can use a fake phone number: Tyler Durden from Fight Club (408) 555-0153.)

The West Sacramento Avenue location (on the corner of West Sacramento and Nord) is smaller than the other two locations. It is your basic grocery store with a deli, bakery, produce department, and liquor. The other two locations also have gas stations, photo developing, and Starbucks. The East Avenue location has a pharmacy. The Mangrove Avenue location offers free wireless internet for customers.

The West Sacramento Ave. store was evacuated on Friday September 4, 2009 after a support beam broke. Part of the ceiling collapsed and broken sprinkler pipes flooded the store. Temporary repairs were made, and long term repairs plans are being formulated.

- Yes at Safeway. The Starbucks in Save Mart closed and Save Mart switched to another brand of coffee.
