The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is a Department under the Governor of California which oversees California's highways, various public airports, helipads, and inter-city rail services. Caltrans has six primary programs: Aeronautics, Highway Transportation, Mass Transportation, Transportation Planning, Administration and the Equipment Service Center.

Locally, Caltrans repairs and maintains Interstate 80 and Highway 113 as well as the many overpasses and bridges which cross them. Caltrans also sponsors a pavement research facility in UCD's West Campus along with a variety of other cooperative arrangements with various University departments.

The current Caltrans director is Will Kempton who is overseen by the Secretary Dale Bonner who, in turn, serves at the pleasure of Governor Jerry Brown.
