Patient Advocate

The term, Patient Advocate, refers to an undergraduate intern at Paul Hom Asian Clinic. Patient Advocate (PA) acts primarily as a translator for a Cantonese, Mandarin, or Taishanese - speaking patients. In addition to this duty, the patient advocate is also expected to take vital signs, dispense drugs, and other administrative duties in order for clinic to run smoothly.

Recruitment

Recruitment for Patient Advocate (PA) occurs twice per academic year. Patient Advocates who are accepted for each recruitment has a requirement of a minimum of two (2) consecutive quarters commitment.

Recruitment for Winter 2015 and Spring 2015 quarters will occur in Fall 2014.

Any aspiring pre-health undergraduate students who can speak any one (1) of the languages listed previously are encouraged to apply.

Benefits

Being a Patient Advocate comes with responsibilities and hard work. However, there are also benefits to being a Patient Advocate in the Paul Hom Asian Clinic.

In addition to gaining clinical experience, you will be able to network with UC Davis medical students, preceptors, and your fellow interns who have similar aspirations as you do. Moreover, you will be able to meet patients from a myriad of backgrounds.

Upon completion of the requirement for each quarter, each Patient Advocate can earn either a transcript notation or one (1) credit hour.
