MRS. BALDWIN DIES AT AGE 83
Mrs. Ernest H. Baldwin, of 31 Pine Street, Saranac Lake, died at 3 a.m. today at a local nursing home where she had been confined since May 12 with a broken hip. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Presbyterian Church with Rev. Jesse Corum officiating. Cremation will take place in Troy.
Mrs. Baldwin was born on July 30, 1873 in Petterham, Mass., the daughter of Willard and Addie Sheperdson Leonard. A teacher by profession, she had for many years operated the Baldwin School in this village.
Survivors include a sister, Miss Florence Leonard, of Saranac Lake.
A fund in memory of Mrs. Baldwin will be arranged for the benefit of the Saranac Lake Free Library.

SARANAC LAKE -- A historical perspective compiled by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hagar, current residents of the Baldwin School located at 34 Pine St. from 1907 until the late 1930s, is on display in the Distin Showcase at the Saranac Lake Free Library.
The Baldwin School was founded by Ernest and Annie Leonard Baldwin. A graduate of Wellesley College, Mrs. Baldwin came to Saranac Lake with her husband, who, like his brother, Dr. Edward Baldwin, then head of Trudeau Sanatorium, had contracted tuberculosis. The school was primarily Mrs. Baldwin's project to earn income.
In addition to the Hagars' memorabilia, contributions came from former pupils, including Miss Sallie Brooks of New York, Eleanor Ridenour of Long Island, Joan Sutton of Cortland and Alice Ridenour of Saranac Lake. The exhibit will be on display until Sept. 8.
