Barbary Coast Savannah BBQ claims to make "the best Carolina pulled pork BBQ west of Chapel Hill, North Carolina." The not-so-secret to their secret is apparently Sonny's BBQ Sauce, flown in from Savannah, Georgia. Carolina barbecue is distinct from most other barbecue in that the vinegar-based sauce is thin and tangy... no thick tomato stuff here! Prices at Barbary Coast are reasonable, ranging from about $7-$12 per person.

The menu is brief, because all we really want is the meat anyway, right? In keeping with the limited menu, Barbary Coast is definitely run like a down-home diner despite it's expensive stone floors and Hot Rod's-style booths. Don't be too surprised if some menu items such as dessert or fruit salad are not available, and don't expect to wash down your meat with beer — the owners only serve iced tea or soda because of a few brawls that broke out when they ran a barbecue place down south (we're not talkin' SoCal). Top that off with gregarious hippy-chic pierced workers, and you've wandered into one funky tasty place.

Yes, the food is good! Highly recommended is the combination plate, said to feed two (though we may be talking two thin folk). This $18 platta includes short ribs, 1/4 chicken, a hot link, and a solid 8oz of Carolina BBQ served with four sides and cornbread — sounds like a lot, but the ribs are tiny and the chicken musta been scrawny. It's a good place to start if you've never been there before though and the food is yummy!

Barbary Coast also sells BBQ to go, at $6/lb for the Carolina pork, $17.95 for a rack of ribs, and $9.95 for a half rack. Catering is also available. To learn about other eats in the Sacramento area, visit restaurants.

2007-08-18 21:53:16   I think they are out of business. I drove by hoping to try it out, and there is a sign for some hot dog place coming soon. Isn't it right next to Jack's Urban Eats? —RogerClark
