Cal Fire Incident Information |
The Lockheed Fire started on August 12, 2009 at about 7pm in the area of the Smith Drainage in Bonny Doon. It took fire personnel 11 days to contain the fire, which burned 7,817 acres in the areas of Bonny Doon and Swanton.
13 outbuildings were destroyed, one was damaged, and there were 10 injuries. At its peak, there were 2,213 fire personnel on scene. The cost to fight the fire was estimated to be $26.6 million.
Cal Fire determined the fire started from the embers of a small fire pit that wasn't properly doused after being used on a property with a small cabin off of Bertoli Drive near the Lockheed Martin facility. Fire officials determined the property owner was responsible for the fire, but legal proceedings were never initiated against the individual.
