Elm Street runs north-south through central Woodland, from Beamer Street to Casa Linda Drive. Situated east of Walnut Street and west of College Street, it is offset to the northeast/southwest at Elliot Street and again at Oak Avenue, by one lot width each time. It almost connects with Freeman Street across Beamer Street, although they are offset from one another to the northwest/southeast by one lot width.

In order from north to south, Elm Street intersects the following streets:

  1. Hangman Alley (east only; this alley is not officially named)
  2. Grafton Street (west only)
  3. Clover Street
  4. Elliot Street (Elm Street jogs one lot width to the southwest at Elliot Street)
  5. North Street
  6. Court Street
  7. Dead Cat Alley
  8. Main Street
  9. Dog Gone Alley
  10. Martin Way
  11. Lincoln Avenue
  12. Dingle Alley (east only; this alley is not officially named)
  13. Oak Avenue (Elm Street jogs one lot width to the southwest at Oak Avenue)
  14. Cross Street
  15. Clanton Way (west only)
  16. Pendegast Street
  17. Lawson Lane (east only)
  18. Bartlett Avenue
  19. Marshall Avenue (west only)
  20. Hays Street (west only)
  21. Maedell Way (west only)

Along the way, it passes by the State Theatre & Multiplex, Dingle Elementary School, Hyman Field, and Grace Hiddleston Park.

Only three of Woodland's many alleys have official names, but Elm Street intersects two of those: Dead Cat Alley and Dog Gone Alley.

Elm Street has been planted with street trees by the city. The street trees include six invasive weed species: Glossy Privet (Ligustrum lucidum), European Olive (Olea europaea), Purple-leaf Plum/Cherry Plum (Prunus cerasifera), Flowering Pear/Callery Pear (Pyrus calleryana), Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia 'Purple Robe'), and Chinese Tallow Tree (Triadica sebifera). However, two tree species native to Woodland are also planted as street trees on Elm Street: Western Sycamore (Platanus racemosa) and Interior Live Oak (Quercus wislizeni). Additionally, Modesto Ash/Arizona Ash (Fraxinus velutina) is planted as a street tree on Elm Street and is native to other parts of California. Other non-native street trees on Elm Street include Trident Maple (Acer buergerianum), Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum), Silver Maple (Acer saccharinum), Strawberry Tree (Arbutus unedo), Camphor Laurel (Camphora officinarum), European Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus 'Fastigiata'), European Hackberry (Celtis australis), Common Hackberry (Celtis occidentalis), Chinese Hackberry (Celtis sinensis), Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis), Chinese Fringe Tree (Chionanthus retusus), English Hawthorn (Crataegus laevigata), Italian Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens), White Ash (Fraxinus americana), Narrowleaf Ash (Fraxinus angustifolia ssp. oxycarpa 'Raywood'), Maidenhair Tree (Ginkgo biloba), Honey Locust (Gleditsia triacanthos), English Walnut (Juglans regia), Goldenrain Tree (Koelreuteria paniculata), Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica), European Bay Laurel (Laurus nobilis), American Sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua), Prairie Crabapple (Malus ioensis 'Prariefire'), Black Tupelo/Sour Gum (Nyssa sylvatica), Chinese Pistache (Pistacia chinensis), London Plane (Platanus × hispanica), Oriental Arborvitae (Platycladus orientalis), Common Apricot (Prunus armeniaca), English Columnar White Oak (Quercus robur 'Fastigiata'), Idaho Locust (Robinia × ambigua 'Idahoensis'), Little-leaf Linden (Tilia cordata), Chinese Elm (Ulmus parvifolia), and Saw-leaf Zelkova (Zelkova serrata).
