Latvian Mary Brawer married Sam Edelberg, also from Latvia, in 1907. She was a sister of the founders of Brawer Brothers Silk Corporation of Patterson, New Jersey. In 1911, the couple bought the cottages at 30 and 32 Park Avenue, that would come to be known as the Béla Bartók Cottage and the Sageman Cottage. Mary established the Cottage as one of the most highly recommended commercial private sanatoria in Saranac Lake, a status it would hold for thirty-seven years.
In 1923, they sold both houses to George C. Sageman. After the birth of their first three children, they bought 11 Neil Street, where Jack Edelberg was born; it was registered with the TB Society, although it was purportedly never operated as a cure cottage.
In the early 1940's, they rented the Stonaker Cottage in Glenwood.
